Volunteer Opportunity in April 2008

Interior Alaska Green Star started as a volunteer effort and remains possible only due to the support it receives from many dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers are a diverse group – students, professionals, office workers, retirees. One thing we all have in common is a desire to make a better world by helping our community reduce waste, conserve energy, reuse or recycle as much as possible, and preserve a healthy and beautiful environment.

If you have the desire and a little time and energy we could really use some help for our upcoming event:

Electronics Recycling Collection
Saturday April 26th 2008 10 am to 4 pm

Contact: Darcie Warden, 907.452.4152, darcie at iagreenstar.org

We will be collecting electronic wastes for recycling – anything with a circuit board, including computers, monitors, keyboards, televisions, cell phones, microwaves, and printers.

The items will be packed onto pallets and loaded onto trailers for shipment to a recycling firm in Seattle. Volunteers sign up for 3 hour shifts for the Saturday event: 9:30 am to 1pm and 12:30pm to 4:15 pm. The extra half hour in the beginning is for training and orientation.

For the event, we will need volunteers to act as:

  • Greeters/Traffic Directors: meet people as they drive up to site, direct them to the unloading area, answer questions, hand out informational flyers
  • Unloaders: reasonablly strong people to unload electronics (up to 45 pounds each) from cars
  • Check-in People: track and mark off on a checklist what’s being unloaded from each vehicle
  • Hard Drive Destructor: Remove and drill out hard drive for anyone wishing to destroy all data on computers they brought.
  • Sorters: sort medium and small electronics, cables, manuals, peripherals
  • Pallet packers and wrappers: load and pack pallets, wrap
  • Cashiers: accept payment of recycling fees and issue receipts if requested
  • Gophers: errands as required, organize refreshments

We could also use help in posting flyers a couple weeks before the event.

If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact us.
