ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DEPOT
We launched our new Electronics Recycling Depot in June, 2011 – featuring regular collections of electronics for recycling on the third weekend of every month.
This means that for the first time, the Fairbanks community now has consistent, year-round access to our responsible electronics recycler – Total Reclaim, Inc.
So far, we have been thrilled with the success of this new project. The first few months were slow, as they followed our biggest ever electronics collection at the Recycling Round-Up in May.
However, things soon got busier and held steady, with about 70 households and businesses bringing us their unwanted electronics for recycling in the months of August through October.
November was another slow month – but this was to be expected, as our collection occurred right in the middle of a record-breaking cold snap in Fairbanks.
Thanks to all the dedicated recyclers who braved the temperatures to bring us their old computers and TVs this month, we appreciate you!
Thanks to all the responsible recyclers in Fairbanks, we have already sent two trailers full of electronics down to Anchorage for recycling – totalling 5.5 tons in August and another 7 tons in November.
Of course, we could not do any of this without the hard work and dedication of our amazing volunteers, who generously donate their time and energy each month to checking, carrying, sorting,
and packing the electronics to prepare them for shipment. We always have tons of fun at these collections - wouldn’t you like to join us next time?
The next dates for the Electronics Recycling Depot are December 16th and 17th. We hope to see you all there!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
IAGS Education Committee
IAGS is currently seeking teachers, education specialists, or folks with an interest in working with kids to assist us with educational projects. We will be forming a new IAGS Education Committee, made up of interested volunteers and led by our board member, Pam Seiser - a Research Biologist at ABR, Inc. Some possible education projects include: developing and providing presentations at local K-12 schools, assisting with a school curriculum project, and participating in teacher in-services and other education-related programs in the community. If you have background, skills, or interests in this area and would like to learn more, please email Pam!
Volunteer & Member Appreciation Party

2011 has been a big year for IAGS, and we wanted to say Thank You to all the Volunteers and Members whose hard work and generous support helped made it all possible! To that end, we threw a Dessert Social on November 9th at the Musher’s Hall. Desserts were prepared with love by IAGS board members and staff, and we were all treated to the music of the ET Barnette String Band. Door prizes, kid’s activities, and great conversation made this a warm night of appreciation and fun on a cold winter’s night. Thank you to everyone who made it to this event and we hope to see more of you at the next one! |
