Our e-recycling program consists of an annual event to collect and recycle electronics from both businesses and households in the Fairbanks area.
A special thanks to everyone who helped make our Spring 2008 event a success!

On Saturday April 26th and Tuesday April 29th, 2008 IAGreenstar collected and shipped 11.9 tons of obsolete electronics from the
Fairbanks
community to a
Seattle
recycling facility, diverting an estimated 1094 pounds of lead from the FNSB landfill.
Approximately 200 households, businesses, non-profits, and government agencies participated in Green Star’s electronic collection event held at the
Carlson
Center
parking lot last April. Green Star’s recycling partners
Northern
Alaska
Environmental
Center
, ASUAF Recycling Club, Glowing Planet: Concept Tree and FNSB Solid Waste Division collected 134 computer monitors, 79 printers, 27 televisions, plus numerous cell phones, VCRs and miles of cables and wires associated with electronic devices. These obsolete electronic devices were shipped to Total Reclaim’s
Anchorage
recycling center where 90% of the e-waste load will be reused. Total Reclaim was selected based on their high recovery rate of materials from e-waste and their responsible handing of toxic materials. Used electronics contain lead, cadmium, barium, chromium, and mercury materials which are toxic to the environment if the electronics are water soaked or burned.
That is why Interior Alaska Green Star was especially interested in recycling older computer monitors and TVs. The video display device used in these units - the bulky cathode ray tube (CRT) - contains 15 to 90 pounds of glass and 2 pounds of lead. The central processing unit of a computer contains another 1.8 pounds of lead. We calculate that this event prevented an estimated 1094 pounds of lead from being placed into the
Fairbanks
landfill.
